About Me

I am a Professor and Coordinator of the Adult and Higher Education Program at the University of Southern Maine. After early wanderings through a Roman Catholic Seminary (B.A. and M. Div. from St. Mary’s Seminary and University) and the profession of Social Work (M.S.W. from the University of Connecticut), I earned my Ph.D. in adult education and gerontology – also at UCONN – and have settled happily since 1984 at the University of Southern Maine as a teacher and scholar.

I teach graduate courses in the history and philosophy of adult education, action research, spirituality, facilitating learning and gerontology. From 1966-2011 I led an annual summer travel course that explored baseball and its relationship to America. Baseball and American Society, A Journey, which logged more than 40,000 miles by motor coach and involved nearly 500 adult learners, won a national education award and was the subject of 25 newspaper and magazine articles. Several of my own writings about baseball are available in the Publications section of this website.

I am a founding member of what was known at the time as “Senior College” but later became the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI). Thanks to the generosity of the Bernard Osher Foundation there are now over 100 OLLI programs across the United States. I serve as a Senior Research Fellow for the national OLLI network and in that role have undertaken numerous studies of older learners and lifelong learning institutes.

Two of my long term service commitments in the Greater Portland Community involve the Southern Maine Agency of Aging, where I have served as board president and New Books, New Readers, sponsored by the Maine Humanities Council. New Books, New Readers uses children and adolescent literature to encourage low-literacy adults to read. I facilitate programs in local adult education centers and correction facilities.

My wife Nancy and I have been happily married since 1980 and have three adult children.
